Changing your address
If your home address changes, you must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) immediately to update your driving license and your vehicle registration. It is free to change your address although if you do not comply, you may be fined up to £1000.
Change the address on your driving license here online or by posting a D1 (motor and car) or D2 (van, lorry, buses) form.
You also need to let your car insurer know about your new address.
You can change the address on your vehicle registration document here online or fill in the details of your address in part 6 of your car registration certificate, date and sign it in the ‘Declaration Box’ in Section 8. Send the Entire registration certificate to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.
How to replace your Registration Document (V5C) if it has been Stolen, Damaged, Lost or Destroyed
If you purchased a car and you have not receive your new registration document within six weeks, you can apply for a replacement for free. You must attach the green new keeper slip you obtained when you purchased the vehicle.
Breakdown in England

In Case of a breakdown you can:
- Call your own insurance or your Breakdown Cover company. If you do not have a cover for it, you can call any Breakdown cover provider. You’ll most likely have to pay an annual membership fee and a calling out charge around £70.
- Call up a local car towing service. Use Google or Phone book e.g.: yell.com or BT, to locate the closest to you. The call out cost is approximately £50 plus towing, which is around £1.50 per mile.
- You can telephone the Highways agency on 08442438591 in case of a breakdown on a motorway, bridge or tunnel. If you need to leave a broken-down vehicle unattended the vehicle should be moved into an area of safety such as the hard shoulder on a motorway. Rescuing fees start at £150.

SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)
Should you take your vehicle off the road or scrap it and you want to stop insuring and taxing it, you’ll have to notify the DVLA by making a SORN.
Your car is ‘off the road’ if you don’t keep it on a public street e.g.: if it is at a garage or on private land. If your car is parked on a public road you should insure and tax it, even if you don’t use it.
After taking your car off the road (made a SORN), the remaining road tax amount will automatically be reimbursed. You’ll also have to cancel your motor insurance. MOT no longer has to be renewed.
Scrap yards in London purchase any, even non-operational cars, to be scrapped for parts. Although if your vehicle is non-functional, you might need to pay around £200 for towing, which will be deducted from the agreed amount.
