Exchanging your foreign driving licence means you can get a British licence without going through the tests again. See if you are eligible for the exchange. Change your address or if you lost your licence, apply for a replacement.
Who is eligible to exchange their driving licence
If you have a USA or any non-EU driving licence that is not listed below, you can drive for 12 months with it, after that you should apply for a new British driving licence by taking theory and practical tests. You can not exchange your licence.
If you have a driving licence from Andorra, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Faroe Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, you can drive for up to 5 years with your licence, but you will need to exchange it between 12 months and 5 years of becoming resident in the UK.
If you have an EU driving licence, your licence can be used the same way as a British one. You can change it if you have lived in the UK for at least 185 days or more than 6 months at a permanent address.
How to exchange your licence
You can obtain a licence application form at the Post Office or online here DVLA-licence form.
You will need:
- D1 form ( For category A and B Motor and Car)
- D2 Form ( For category C, D, E Bus, Lorry, etc)
- D4 Medical Form (You only need this form if you are exchanging your Category C, D, E Bus, Lorry, etc driving licence and you are 45 years old or above. Download and print D4 completed by a doctor)
- Your original foreign Driving License
- Your original passport or EU ID card
- One passport photo in colour
- The replacement fee is £43 + £5 postal order fee
Send these to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BT. You will receive your British driving licence and your passport within 2 weeks.

Changing the address on your British driving licence
If you want to change the address on your licence you can do it online: Change the address or by post. You just need to fill in the D741 letter you received with your licence. If you do not have it, you can get an application form at the Post Office or online: DVLA-licence forms. Form D1 is for cars or motorbikes, and Form D2 is for Lorries and Buses. Post it to DVLA Swansea SA99 1BN. You can be fined £1000 if you do not update your driving licence with your current address.
If you have lost your British Driving Licence
You can apply for a replacement online: Replace a driving licence or by phone 0300 790 6801 Monday – Friday: 8 – 19 hours, Saturday: 8-14 hours.
